DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Arts is proud to present a variety of in-person and virtual summer camps for community youth ages 8-14. Sessions begin June 14. Students can learn skills in theater\, aerial arts\, comedy\, and painting\, photography\, mixed media & collage and more!\nIn-person class sizes are between 10-12 students. Fly\, climb\, and swing in Aerial Circus! Taught by Joe Simms\, Sophie Wingerd and Tresa Honaker. \nRegister \n  \nComedy Camp (Sessions 1\, 2\, & 5): This class is an introduction for kids to learn how to write and perform jokes\, and ultimately\, be funnier than their dads. Kids will learn an appreciation of humor and comedy\, plus discover what makes things funny. We’ll cover various forms of humor. By the end of class\, they’ll be able to write and tell a joke they made up themselves. Taught by David Roth & Yuiry Mikhalevskiy. \nRegister \n  \nTheater Camp (Sessions 1 – 4): Bring your curiosity or passion for theatre and performing\, and come create a show to perform for friends and family on the last day of class. We explore “principals of good acting and character development” through theatre games\, skill development exercises\, mini-plays\, skits\, poetry\, and Broadway songs. Everyone is onstage for the entire show and has the opportunity to create\, develop and sustain a believable character that is part of the story. Taught by Dinah Smith.\n* Younger children 6-8 with dance or theatre training will be considered for acceptance by the instructor into all sessions if there is space. \nRegister \n  \nDigital Photography Camp (Session 4): Learn how to use your digital camera to take better photographs with lessons on aperture\, shutter speed\, and ISO. Kids will also learn lighting and composition techniques\, and explore portraiture and landscape photography. Prior experience in photography is not needed to enroll in this camp\, but all students must have their own digital camera with manual settings to use for the duration of camp. \nRegister \n  \nLet’s Paint! Acrylic Painting and Mixed Media (Session 1): Students will be using acrylic paint on stretched canvas\, paper\, and collage in this exciting week of studio art. Young artists will develop skills in color mixing\, brushwork\, composition and design as they explore colorful summer themes and build a portfolio of their own personal work in a creative and supportive environment. All materials provided. Taught by Eileen Blodgett. \nRegister \n  \nAltered Book Journals: Mixed Media & Collage (Session 2): Repurposing old hardcover books as journals\, we’ll use a variety of print and recycled media\, paint\, markers and even fabric to explore and process the children’s feelings\, and talk about their lives. In their journals\, kids will also explore blackout poetry as a means to self expression and healing. Taught by Cheri Guerrette. \nRegister \n  \nPaint Like the Masters (Session 3 & 5): Budding young artists paint in acrylics on canvas\, recreating their own versions of the works of great masters such as Van Gogh\, Monet & Picasso! Taught by Denise Wey. \nRegister Session 3 \nRegister Session 5 \n  \nPainting & Mixed Media Adventures (Session 4): Our young artists will create a number of artworks while experimenting with the use of mixed media which combines many materials such as paint\, collage\, charcoal\, chalk pastel\, printing\, found objects etc. In addition\, each child will create an altered book art journal\, where they can explore and express themselves. This fun camp is open to all levels. Taught by with Valerie Stuart. \nRegister \n  \n \n\n \nMeet the Teachers\n\n  \nJoe Simms joined The Movement Alliance in 2002 where he met Tresa Honaker who was part of the original directors and founders of TMA. Joe has been a principal performer/soloist with AirAligned since 2004. Joe has a background in the Martial Arts of Tae Kwon Do Jujitsu and most recently Aikido. Master classes include: Velocity in Seattle Washington\, Conduit Dance Company in Portland Oregon\, The Edge in Los Angeles\, aerial intensives with Ingrid Hoffman L.A. and Isadora Duncan Dance Company. Joe is currently working as a body worker\, aerial and Pilates instructor and is the owner of Pilates Body in Nevada City. Joe is AirAligned’s Co-Director and heads up the AirAligned Academy in Grass Valley. \nSophie Wingerd began her performance career as a young child in Grass Valley California as a dancer studying all forms of dance but focusing mainly on ballet. In 2008 Sophie began aerial classes with AirAligned aerial dance group. Aerial Dance was something that Sophie quickly excelled at. Sophie was asked to become a teachers assistant with AirAligned in 2010. Also at that time Sophie became an assistant for Julie Lang Acro/Dance teacher at Sierra Dance Institute and performed locally in Grass Valley with SDI\, AirAligned and PAG children’s theater at The Center for the Arts. In 2012 Sophie was accepted into Le Studio in Los Angeles CA under the direction of Nathalie Yves Gaulthier. She performed in the Le PeTiT Cirque Troupe from 2013-2014 While in LA advanced Studies were obtained through Cirque School LA. Also while in Los Angeles Sophie worked for Kristy Beauvais owner/director of Focus Fish teaching all ages aerial classes in: Static Trapeze\, Aerial Hoop\, Aerial Fabric\, Aerial Hammock and Aerial Rope. Currently Sophie is on the teaching staff for AirAligned aerial dance group working primarily with advanced performance students. Sophie is also available to perform for corporate and commercial productions as a professional dancer\, acrobat and aerialist. \nLaksmi Greenberg has been a photographer for over 20 years. She has been published in National Geographic and has had several gallery exhibitions. She is currently teaching photography at Nevada City School of the Arts. website. \n \nDavid Roth is a stand-up comedian who’s performed at Outside Lands and produces a regular show at Punch Line San Francisco. As a Director\, Choreographer\, Actor\, Teacher/Coach\, Dinah has worked in the Entertainment Industry and as a Performing Arts Educator/performer since the 70’s. She has directed\, choreographed\, or performed locally for Sierra Stages\, LeGacy\, Paul Emery\, Placer Community Theatre\, Lake Wildwood\, Synthetic Unlimited\, and other independent Producers. She has performed locally with Legacy\, Placer Community Theatre\, CATS\, and Quest Theatre Works. Most recently she appeared as Claree in Steele Magnolias. As a certificated teacher\, Dinah’s extensive teaching career (all in the performing arts) includes private\, & public schools. \nEileen Blodgett is originally from Bucks County\, PA and has studied Art in Pennsylvania and California\, as well as in Japan\, where she resided for a  year. She holds a BS In Art Education and an MA in Ed / Art from San Francisco State  University. Eileen works in her rural home studio in Nevada City and has been a resident artist for  over 10 years at Artist Studios in the Foothills in Grass Valley\, California (ASiF Studios) She is co-director of ARTsCOOL which offers programs and workshops for adults and children in painting\, printmaking\, drawing and mixed media. Eileen has hosted annual week-long painting and mixed media workshops in Sayulita and San Miguel Mexico as well as other beautiful destinations. website. \nCheri Guerrette: My work as an artist expresses itself through a passion for unlimited possibilities\, exploration and experimentation with mixed media collage and most recently oils. I begin with a figurative image and an overall concept to tell a story relating to the American culture of the 1950’s and 60’s. Having been born in the 50’s I am very drawn to the elegance\, style and simplicity of that era. My work is figurative and portraiture which is what I love to paint. The creative process for me is a continuous experience of stepping into the unknown and allowing the magic to unfold. website. \nDenise Wey is a painter and teaching-artist residing in Nevada County. Her vibrant\, large-format contemporary paintings of the Yuba River grace many homes in the county and beyond. Denise has a passion not only for painting\, but also for teaching. DESCRIPTION:About Off the Wall\n  \nA contemporary mixed media exhibition using materials to create form and textures beyond the traditional stereotypes of fiber. Breaking the confinement of two-dimensional\, wall-based work\, each artist’s interpretation expands the conversation surrounding fibrous sculpture and the line between crafting and contemporary art. Using various processes\, Off the Wall challenges the practicality of material to create new forms and ideas.  \nFeaturing works by Linda Gelfman\, Faye Schoolcraft\, Beth Leydon\, Jennifer Landau\, Susan Else\, Sandra Poteet\, Peggy Wright\, and Valerie Messervy Birkhoff with curators Lin Schiffner and Brynn Farwell  \n  \nContributing Artists\n \nLinda Gelfman\n#Topple the Patriarchy-the Reemergence of the Great Cosmic Mother” \nThe state of the world is bad and getting worse. Something\, continually\, is not working. Humankind keeps making the same mistakes over and over and over. Fed by greed\, power\, capitalism\, sexism\, racism\, a sense of entitlement\, this one is better than the other. “This Land is Mine God Gave This Land to Me*”…Bullshit!! \nIt is time for a change. \n#TopplethePatriarchy (or #smashthepatriarchy). The patriarchy is broke and we need to embrace a new way of living or face extinction. \n“The opposite of patriarchy is not matriarchy\, but fraternity. And I think it’s women who are going to have to break the spiral of power and find the trick of cooperation.”-Germaine Greer \nThe reemergence of the Great Cosmic Mother is needed to help us find a balance. This installation is part of the change. \n*check out Nina Paley’s version of this on YouTube \nLinda Gelfman was born in Chicago\, she received her BFA from University of Illinois and moved to Sacramento in 1989 to get her MFA from California State University\, Sacramento. She has been head of the Ceramic Department at American River College since 2003. Linda has had a love affair with clay for over 45 years and about 15 years ago she started cheating on clay to experiment in fiber art. She uses up-cycled clothes from the thrift store and her closet to create her whimsical but socially relevant sculptures/installations. Her most favorite place to be in the world is her studio. The fiber and clay have come to an understanding finally and comfortably share her attentions. \nBeth Leydon\nSince childhood\, Beth has been a maker and creator. In 2011 she was exposed to a simple felting technique and dove headlong into this ancient and ever evolving textile art form. She crafts one-of-a-kind pieces utilizing wet and “nuno” felting processes. Wool\, yarn\, silk and other fibers are transformed into functional and wearable art. Scarves\, hats\, slippers\, vests\, purses and decorative vessels are just a handful of items that she produces. She enjoys experimenting with hand dyeing and hunting thrift stores for garments to be repurposed. Locally sourced materials are utilized whenever possible. She offers classes and workshops at her home studio as well as community maker spaces. \nWebsite \nJennifer Landau\nJennifer Landau’s passion for art\, fiber and the mountains has been with her since childhood. Jen is a lifelong resident of the San Francisco Bay Area\, with the Sierra Nevada and France as places of family\, exploration\, retreat\, and inspiration. With an academic background in organizational development\, Jennifer is a pioneer of the profession\, graphic facilitation\, where visual thinking is used with teams and organizations. In Jen’s fiber art\, handspun wool\, “knit felt” and machine felting are signature materials. Increasingly Jennifer is becoming known for her 3D and freestanding art quilt work. Abstract themes draw on her background in graphic design\, while landscapes reflect her love of both outdoor and urban life. Her art quilts have been\nshown in local art events as well as regional and global SAQA exhibitions. Art Quilting Studio magazine has featured her work since 2013\, and she enjoys speaking about the use of wool in her artwork. She sells her fiber work and demonstrates spinning at the Great Dickens Christmas Fair in the San Francisco area. Her work can be seen online at ruedoak.com and hammondhandspun.com \nSandra Poteet\nTransitioning between the painted fabric work and other fiber manipulations renews my energy. My art continues to evolve\, there are no rules and I exercise the right to try anything new. All doors are open\, I can go through. \nThe choice of cloth as medium sometimes sets me in the midst of the never ending argument about what is art\, and what is craft. So many opinions. I am clear that my work is art\, but I can resolve to say that if the viewer also decides my work is “Art”\, it is well-crafted. If chosen to be seen as “Craft” pieces\, they are artful\, designed and executed by me to provoke an aesthetic or emotional response. If an original work has integrity and can touch someone’s sensibilities – is the distinction critical? \n Website \nSusan Else\nI describe my work as “stealth art” the comfortable ambiance of sewn cloth draws viewers in\, where they are confronted with the often-uncomfortable paradoxes of contemporary life. My work has developed in tandem with the art quilt movement\, but I am one of the few artists making figurative sculpture—often incorporating sound\, light\, and movement—from this medium. I use cloth to create an alternate universe\, and the resulting work is full of contradictions: it is whimsical\, edgy\, mundane\, surreal\, and engaging\, all at once. Each piece tells a story\, but the narrative is always open to interpretation. The power and beauty of the collaged and quilted cloth surface play off the form and content of the work\, and the result is a dynamic seesaw of meanings and possibilities. \n Website \nValerie Messervy Birkhoff\nValerie Messervy Birkhoff graduated from Portland State University with a B.S. in Arts and Letters. Her work includes clay sculpture\, hand-sewn-beaded-wire sculptures\, oil/acrylic painting\, and mixed media. Her work has been shown from Marin to Joshua Tree and several places in-between. Her awards include the following: Best of Show\, for her beaded sculpture\, “In Her Hands” at Sacramento Fine Arts Center\, and her clay pieces “Sweating Dirt” and “Human Interaction” have also received a Best of Show there as well; First place award for 3D for her clay sculpture “Preasevare” with the Joshua Tree National Park Art Council Show\, where she has participated since 2014 and received a Second Place Award in 2015 for her beaded sculpture “Ouch!.” Her clay sculpture “Unveiled Hero” received 3rd Place\, a Bold Award for her clay sculpture “Words Hurt\,” and her oil painting “Humour” was given an Award of Excellence\, in Sacramento. She was included in the 30th Annual Clay Competition in Davis in 2019. She is an instructor of expressive clay sculpture in Auburn at JCLee Studios. \nWebsite \n  \nFaye Schoolcraft\nFaye Schoolcraft was born in Chicago\, Illinois\, to artist parents\, Freeman and Cora Schoolcraft . The family moved to Georgia in 1965. While in the South\, she worked for the South Carolina Arts Commission Mobile Arts Program\, teaching workshops in rural communities. She migrated to San Francisco\, California in 1981 and did post-graduate work at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland\, and earned a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from Fiberworks of Berkeley\, a branch of John F. Kennedy University. She currently resides in Nevada City\, California and teaches ceramics and fiber arts at Sierra College. She has exhibited nationally\, most notably: Crocker Museum Art Auction\, Sacramento\, B.N.S.A . Crocker Museum\, Sacramento\, J.Paul Getty Villa Museum Store\, Sculptural Object Fine Art ( S.O.F.A) Chicago\, National Fiber Directions in Wichita\, Kansas\, Small Wonders in New York\, New York\, Art Santa Fe\, Burning Man \, Black Rock Desert\, Nevada\, Feats of Clay in Lincoln\, California\, The Los Angeles Art Show. \nWebsite \n  \nPeggy Wright\nMy work integrates my life long interests in dance and the natural environment. \nI try to capture the grace of bodies moving in space\, the play of light on the forest floors\, the reflection of the landscape on water\, or trees and mountains silhouetted against the sky. \nI find inspiration in the textures\, patterns\, and shapes of the surfaces of the earth and use these metaphorically to create organic structures that will relay an experience or articulate a concept. \nWebsite \n  \nLin Schiffner\nMy focus on fiber art began 20 years ago after decades of more traditional quilting and exploration of many art forms – graphic arts and design; painting; and printmaking.  Contemporary fabric\, fiber and mixed media art provide avenues for the artistic expression of my life experience and centers on inspirational themes such as hope\, compassion\, peace\, and the environment.   \nI enjoy combining personal and heartfelt subject matter with a passion for color and a compulsion for finely detailed craft. In 2013\, she moved to Seattle\, Washington to attend Cornish College of the Arts where she received her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in 2017. She has exhibited in several solo and group exhibitions in Seattle\, New York\, and Nevada County. During her time in school\, she studied abroad in Rome\, Italy\, in the Rome Studio Art Program through the University of Washington\, Bothell. She was selected as one in fourteen students across the continent to participate in the New York Studio Residency Program in Brooklyn\, NY\, in 2016. Brynn has worked for several non-profits including the Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle\, as a youth sailing instructor and A.I.R. (Artist in Residence) Gallery in Brooklyn\, as a Benefit Coordinator. DESCRIPTION:About the Artist\nRuth Chase is a multimedia artist whose work speaks to the value of people to their community—working with themes of belonging\, visibility\, and what it means to be a human. Ruth is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute whose artistic practice is inquiry-based and engages community bridge-building. She was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Los Angeles for Art in Action and a grant to an individual artist from the Carl Jacobs Foundation. She was granted a residency at the Millay Colony for the Arts in NY\, published in Professional Artist Magazine\, Catapult Art Magazine\, and Huffington Post\, and has taught at the Crocker Art Museum. Ruth was a featured artist on the Dead Files TV program and was awarded an Artist in Residence at Nevada County Arts for Artist Activating Communities through a grant from the California Arts Council for three consecutive years. Her film BELONGING screened at the 18th Annual Nevada City Film Festival and Wild & Scenic Film Festival. Ruth received the Legendary Female Artist of Venice\, exhibited in The Crocker Kingsley\, the Museum of Northern California Art\, and the Diego Rivera Gallery at the San Francisco Art Institute. \n  \nAbout the Exhibition\nA solo exhibition of paintings and videos by Ruth Chase exploring identity alongside a public response to the notion of what it means to be a woman.\nRuth’s work is fueled by social engagement and collaboration. Working in video and paint\, she presents work that challenges traditional roles prescribed to us by society and explores feminine and masculine traits that embody all genders rather than being defined by one’s outward appearance. The work shares contrasting viewpoints\, encouraging the viewer to come to their own conclusions.\nRuth paints large acrylic paint on canvas\, blurring the lines with drips and intersecting patterns\, shapes\, and edges. Gray is a dominant color to represent gender neutrality and a departure from colors commonly associated with women\, allowing the viewer to bring more of themselves to the work without being drawn into commercial stereotypes of the feminine. \nThe video work informs the paintings and delivers a broader perspective. The art film is a collage of moments that allows the viewer to connect with unlikely perspectives\, finding a sense of belonging in someone they may see as “other.”\nThe work mindfully shares contrasting viewpoints\, allowing the viewer to come to their own conclusions. The exhibition is a gaze into a broader experience about being human and being part of a complex species that is ever-evolving. SUMMARY:The Allman Betts Band
DESCRIPTION:In December of 2017\, Devon Allman was ready. After a year of mourning the losses of his mother and father\, Allman was ready to make music again. He deeply appreciated all of the condolences and well-wishes\, but\, respectfully\, it was time to forge ahead. \nAllman organized a concert at the historic Fillmore in San Francisco to honor the music and memory of his father\, founding Allman Brothers Band keyboardist and singer\, Gregg Allman\, and also to debut his new band\, The Devon Allman Project. A proverbial star-studded affair- with guests such as G. Love and Robert Randolph- the marathon performance also marked the beginning of a partnership with Duane Betts\, son of founding Allman Brothers Band guitarist and singer\, Dickey Betts. It was time\, in that historic venue\, to pass the spirt to this next generation. It was time to take all the lessons of the past\, all their collective experiences\, and make something new. \nBetts recently had turned solo after a touring stint with folk-rockers Dawes\, and would serve as an opening artist on the Devon Allman Project 2018 world tour\, as well as joining Allman each night for a musical tip of the hat to their respective fathers. The year-long trek was the first to pair Allman and Betts\, and saw the two tally nearly 100 dates at theatres and festivals nationally and internationally\, including a summer leg in Europe\, and notable appearances at Colorado’s venerable Red Rocks amphitheater\, the Peach Festival\, Gov’t Mule’s Island Exodus in Jamaica\, and a return to The Fillmore for the second annual\, sold-out Allman Family Revival. \n \n2018 provided them a certifiable proof-of-concept: Performing a repertoire gleaned mostly from their respective solo careers\, as well as a handful of Brothers gems\, the Devon Allman Project with Duane Betts consistently drew audiences growing in size and enthusiasm with each successive leg. \nNow\, they were both determined to embrace a new challenge; to write and record new music that could someday join the classics; to wow new audiences; to form a new band. During off-days on the bus or in hotel rooms\, Devon and Duane collaborated on new original material\, inviting respected songwriter Stoll Vaughn for writing sessions on the road. \nOn the still-smoldering heels of the hugely successful Project world tour\, Devon and Duane circled back to their roots for this ambitious next step. They called up their old friend Berry Duane Oakley\, son of the Allman Brothers Band’s founding late bassist\, Berry Oakley\, and floated the idea of joining them. The trio’s musical friendship traces back to The Allman Brothers Band’s 20th anniversary summer tour in 1989 when the three first met\, and often sat-in with the Rock-And-Roll Hall of Fame inductees; teenage descendants rightfully joining a rock-and-roll legacy. \nAs well\, they recruited seasoned players from the Project ensemble: slide guitar sorcerer Johnny Stachela\, drummer John Lum\, and percussionist R Scott Bryan (Sheryl Crow). In November of 2018\, they announced the formation of The Allman Betts Band. \nEnlisting producer Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell\, Margo Price) the band booked a post-Thanksgiving week at the famed Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. They brought in Gregg’s former bandmate\, Peter Levin\, and former Allman Brother and current Rolling Stone’s keybordist Chuck Leavell as guests\, adding organ and piano. For a subsequent world tour\, they recruited keyboardist John Ginty (Dixie Chicks\, Robert Randolph). Motivated by classic recording techniques and vintage gear in the historic Alabama studio\, they cut the album live. No computers. No digital editing. DESCRIPTION:Tab Benoit’s Swampland Jam – Tab Benoit\, one of music’s most enduring and masterful blues and roots performers –  and an authority on Louisiana music and culture – leads an all star band featuring three giants of Louisiana Roots Music – Big Chief Monk Boudreaux\, Johnny Sansone\, and Waylon Thibodeaux. \nBig Chief Monk Boudreaux (HBO’s Treme) incorporates African Rhythms and Mardi Gras Chants into his own original style of Rhythm and Blues. Boudreaux is the Big Chief of the Golden Eagles\, a legendary Mardi Gras Indian tribe. He is widely known for his long-time collaboration with Big Chief Bo Dollis in The Wild Magnolias. In 2016\, Boudreaux received a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship in Washington\, DC. \nJohnny Sansone goes deep into Bayou Blues and Zydeco with his roof shaking vocals\, harmonica and accordion. SUMMARY:The Mermen
DESCRIPTION:Bio\nThe Mermen are an American rock band from San Francisco\, California that formed in 1989.  The group’s sound was originally rooted in instrumental surf and psychedelic music of the 1960s. Although their music delves into many genres\, the sound is non-commercial and is mainly influenced by the band’s founder\, songwriter and guitarist Jim Thomas’ modern melodic visions. The band’s music is entirely instrumental and “does a good job of defying description”\, not fitting neatly into any musical genre.  In concert\, the Mermen always perform as a trio: electric guitar\, electric bass\, and drums (Jim Thomas on guitar\,  Jennifer Burnes on bass\, Martyn Jones on drums).  Their music is rooted in the kind of instrumental “surf” music sound made by the Ventures\, Dick Dale\, Link Wray\, and Jack Nitzsche (e.g. The Lonely Surfer).  Their sound is often described as distinctly of the American West (especially the West Coast).  This is an American sound; think Aaron Copland and bluegrass\, (Jim played in the bluegrass flatpicking championships in Winfield\, Kansas in 1977).  It is a unique sound influenced by Native American\, cowboy and transpacific sounds.  One writer dubbed the Mermen’s sonic signature as “the sound of California”.  During live shows\, Mermen songs often morph into lengthy improvised variations on a theme -a la the Grateful Dead- with new pieces of music created on the spot.

DESCRIPTION:Virginian\, Keller Williams\, released his first album in 1994\, FREEK\, and has since given each of his albums a single syllable title: BUZZ\, SPUN\, BREATHE\, LOOP\, LAUGH\, HOME\, DANCE\, STAGE\, GRASS\, DREAM\, TWELVE\, LIVE\, ODD\, THIEF\, KIDS\, BASS\, PICK\, FUNK\, VAPE\, SYNC\, RAW\, SANS\, ADD\, SPEED and CELL.   Each title serves as a concise summation of the concept guiding each project. Keller’s albums reflect his pursuit to create music that sounds like nothing else. Un-beholden to conventionalism\, he seamlessly crosses genre boundaries. The end product is music that encompasses rock\, jazz\, funk and bluegrass\, and always keeps the audience on their feet. Keller built his reputation initially on his engaging live performances\, no two of which are ever alike. For most of his career he has performed solo. His stage shows are rooted around Keller singing his compositions and choice cover songs\, while accompanying himself on acoustic guitar\, bass\, guitar synthesizer and drum samples; a technique called live phrase sampling or “looping”.  The end result often leans toward a hybrid of alternative folk and groovy electronica\, a genre Keller jokingly calls “acoustic dance music” or ADM.” Keller’s constant evolution has led to numerous band projects as well; Keller & The Keels\, Grateful Grass\, KWahtro\, Keller and the Travelin’ McCourys\, Grateful Gospel and More Than A Little to name a few. Keller can be found playing clubs and festivals around the U.S. with these projects throughout the year.

DESCRIPTION:Bedouine\, a gallicized riff on bedouin\, the nomad\, the wanderer. Anyone can assume such a name\, but Azniv Korkejian has an experience of what it means\, the type of ground it covers. “Moving around so much caused me at some point to feel displaced\, to not really belong anywhere and I thought that was a good title.” Her development was shaped by political landscapes and family opportunities\, her adult life patterned by paths of her own. Born in Aleppo\, Syria to Armenian parents\, Korkejian spent her childhood in Saudi Arabia\, moving to America when her family won a Green Card lottery. They settled in Boston\, then Houston\, but she split for L.A. as soon as she could. A casual offer to stay on a horse farm took her to the rolling hills of Lexington\, Kentucky\, followed by a year in Austin\, and a trip east to Savannah for a degree in sound design. Returning to L.A.\, she discovered a close-knit community of musicians in Echo Park that started to feel like home. Maybe America is just a highway that leads back to L.A. \nBedouine has a sound. Sixties folk meets seventies country-funk with a glimmer of bossa nova cool. Lithe guitar picking and precise lyrical excursions. That mesmerizing voice and phrasing.

DESCRIPTION:Banhart emerged seemingly out of nowhere in 2002 with his first CD collection\, Oh Me Oh My…The Way the Day Goes By the Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs of the Christmas Spirit\, compiled by Swans frontman Michael Gira for his Young God label from homemade recordings the itinerant Banhart had amassed as he traveled the world. He was born Devendra Obi Banhart in Houston\, Texas\, but spent his childhood in Caracas\, Venezuela; as a teenager\, his family returned to the States\, relocating in Southern California\, where he soon became enamored of skateboard culture. “Ballad of Keenan Milton\,” in fact\, is an homage to the legendary skateboarder\, who died tragically in 2001 in a freak accident. \nMusic was always a passion for Banhart\, and he discovered it in ways both magical and haphazard. As a boy in Caracas\, says Banhart\, “I was surrounded by salsa\, merengue\, cumbia\, some bossa nova—that was ubiquitous\, you’d hear it on any street.” In high school\, Banhart became obsessed with rocksteady\, bluebeat\, and ska\, which he’d learned about via skateboarding videos. Finishing high school\, he thought he would pursue a visual arts career so he enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute\, but he soon dropped out in favor of exploring music. He has\, however\, successfully maintained a parallel career as a painter: Banhart’s distinctive\, minutely inked\, often enigmatic drawings have appeared in galleries all over the world\, including the Art Basel Contemporary Art Fair in Miami; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels; and Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art. He has created the cover art for most of his records\, and in 2010 his artwork and packaging for What Will We Be was nominated for a Grammy. \nSan Francisco had an indelible influence on Banhart; the flamboyant dressing he adopted that entranced the fashion crowd (and fueled the “freak folk” and “New Weird America” labels the press attached to him) was inspired in part by the seriously subversive cross-dressing culture of San Francisco’s legendary performance troupe the Cockettes. \nLike Nonesuch label-mates Caetano Veloso and David Byrne\, Banhart has embraced an astonishingly wide range of musical ideas\, from folk to blues to the avant garde. He extols the late Arthur Russell\, a relentlessly eclectic artist who was impossible to pigeonhole in his brief lifetime\, and Banhart has brought back into the spotlight forgotten artists like late-’60s singer Vashti Bunyan\, whose psychedelic folk he championed. He has collaborated with Brazilian legends Os Mutantes\, the Swans\, ANOHNI\, and Beck\, among others\, and has engaged in art projects like conceptualist Doug Aitken’s monumental 2012 Song 1 video installation on the façade of the Hirschhorn Museum in Washington\, DC. \nFor Banhart\, his career remains “an adventure and an exploration.” Banhart admits\, “I don’t really take care of my voice\, but\, just like with playing guitar\, you get more familiar with it\, and you get better at it. I’ve always said that I’m very good at not knowing how to play the guitar but\, really\, it’s just that I’m very comfortable with the utter uncertainty of my approach.”

SUMMARY:The Greenberg Collection
DESCRIPTION:The Greenberg Collection\n  \nHindi Greenberg began acquiring art pieces while still in college—at that time\, just small items of pottery or jewelry.  She’s always loved color\, design and shape and was a studio art minor in college\, taking some drawing and pottery courses.  Between her junior and senior year of college\, she traveled for seven weeks with an art history professor and thirty students to see almost every museum\, church\, castle and art installation in Europe (much of which was too staid for her tastes). \nWhen she lived in Germany after college\, she bought a few pieces to memorialize her European stay.  After returning to the U.S. and graduating from law school\, she worked in American Samoa in the South Pacific and bought some local handicrafts and art\, then traveled around New Zealand\, Australia and Asia\, buying a few representative pieces.  Upon her return once more to the States\, she was too busy starting and running her business (and\, at first\, too poor) to buy art\, but slowly she acquired a painting here and a sculpture there. When she later spent two years living in Scottsdale\, she disliked the locale so much that the only thing she enjoyed was attending art festivals\, so that’s when her collecting began in earnest. \nTwo years later\, she moved to Nevada County and found it to be a haven for talented artists and fun art shows.  Her collection grew rapidly over the past 19 years and now encompasses some 400 pieces—paintings (watercolor\, oil\, acrylic\, collage\, pastel\, encaustic)\, drawings\, sculpture (metal\, clay\, glass\, wood)\, pottery\, beading\, fabric\, assemblages\, and many indefinable odds and ends. \nHindi’s collection tends toward the whimsical or quirky and colorful—few pieces with people in them\, most of animals or nature.  They run from a three inch gourd anteater to a six foot tall metal and glass assemblage. SUMMARY:PROJECT Trio
DESCRIPTION:PROJECT Trio is a passionate\, high energy chamber music ensemble who blends their classical training with an eclectic taste in musical styles. The genre-defying Trio is acclaimed by the press as “packed with musicianship\, joy and surprise” and “exciting a new generation of listeners about the joys of classical and jazz music.” Pattillo\, Stephenson\, and Seymour compose and arrange most of their own music\, which they publish on their Harmonyville label. Their repertoire includes pieces for trio as well as several works with orchestra. PROJECT Trio’s discography includes five recordings and a DVD\, PROJECT Trio: Live in Concert. This season will see the release of their 6th recording of original new music. Their recordings When Will Then Be Now and the Random Roads Collection\, debuted at the top of both the Billboard Canadian and US classical and jazz charts. The Trio is dedicated to arts education\, teaching the art and joy of jamming on classical instruments and opening minds to what instruments can do. Engaging younger audiences\, PROJECT Trio has performed and led workshops for over 350\,000 students on four continents and is instantly recognizable to students of all ages as a result of their YouTube following and appearances on popular TV shows on Nickelodeon and MTV. SUMMARY:David Sedaris
DESCRIPTION:With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques\, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. Beloved for his personal essays and short stories\, his pieces regularly appear in The New Yorker and have twice been included in “The Best American Essays.” There are over twelve million copies of his books in print. In 2020 the New York Public Library voted Me Talk Pretty One Day one of the 125 most important books of the last 125 years. Sedaris’s original audio pieces can often be heard on the public radio show This American Life. He has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. In 2019 David Sedaris became a regular contributor to CBS Sunday Morning.
