“Spirituality is the aspect I revere most about my existence on this material plane. As a relative novice within its practice, I utilize both the art making process and the finished work to commune with the more subtle components of my larger ‘self.’ This practice provides an avenue for other Claires to communicate with my conscious mind. By interpreting the finished pieces, I am able to understand how other parts of me, especially past selves, feel and perceive facets of my personal life and the world. The enlightenment derived in this fashion helps me remain at peace with being a human woman on Earth as well as providing me with a healthy distance from the parts of modern life that have a tendency to be suffocating. My process is a tool in self care. My finished work is an exercise in wider understanding. My new body of work, Subtle Divination, attempts to document this process while incorporating an element of play; it teaches me about the healthy balance between work, desire, expectation, and commitment. My work says to me, “Let’s dream big, but let’s stay relatively detached from the outcome and see what magic happens.”
