Join us as we celebrate the 85th birthday of a local legend – composer, pianist and vocalist Terry Riley. He launched the minimalist movement with his classic IN C. Composed in 1964, this seminal work had an enormous impact on the course of  music in the United Staes and beyond. Terry is a prolific composer, having written in virtually every form from solo piano to works for choir and orchestra. His music has been played in the great concert halls throughout the world and his discography includes 60 recordings. Terry was named one of the “1000 Makers of the 20th Century” by The Sunday Times of London.
In addition to his solo piano concerts, Mr. Riley performs extensively with his son,
guitarist Gyan Riley, who joins his father for this concert. Over his career, Gyan has worked with Zakir Hussein, Chet Baker, Krishna Bhatt, John Zorn, and Leonard Slatkin, among others.
One of Terry’s most frequent collaborators is the San Francisco-based Kronos Quartet, who also performs as part of this birthday celebration. Terry has written nearly 30 works of music for the group, resulting in such recordings as Salome Dances for Peace (1989), Requiem for Adam (2001), The Cusp of Magic (2008), Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector: Music of Terry Riley (2015), and Sun Rings (2019).
For more than 45 years, Kronos – David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola), and Sunny Yang (cello) – has pursued a singular artistic vision, combining a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to continually reimagine the string quartet experience. In the process, Kronos has become one of the most celebrated and influential groups of our time, performing thousands of concerts worldwide, releasing more than 60 recordings of extraordinary breadth and creativity, collaborating with many of the world’s most accomplished composers and performers, and commissioning more than 1,000 works and arrangements for string quartet. Kronos has received over 40 awards, including both the Polar Music and Avery Fisher Prize, two of the most prestigious awards given to musicians.
