The Center For The Arts Presents Bristle (Electric) & Similar Fashion
Thursday, March 1st, 2018 8:00 PM Off Center Stage
THIS CONCERT IS CANCELED
North meets South, jazz collides with rock, classical and punk when Nevada County/Bay Area cutting edge chamber music squad Bristle hosts the LA-based avant-rollercoaster jazz-n-roll band Similar Fashion. Local saxman Randy McKean’s dream team of players Bristle funnels his love of multiple musical genres into a collective sensibility that thrives on left turns, while Similar Fashion combines front man Logan Hone’s kinetic compositions with intense and joyous singing, interlocking grooves, lush landscapes, and dancing. Sparks guaranteed to fly.
For this show, McKean & Co. plug special guests John Finkbeiner on guitar and Tim Bulkley on drums into the mix for the debut of Electric Bristle.
Bristle, an avant chamber jazz quartet based in Nevada County and the San Francisco Bay Area, has a mission: to startle, astonish, amaze. It wants to raise the little hairs on the back of your neck. Comprised of four crack performers playing a uniquely flexible combination of reeds and strings—composers Randy McKean and Cory Wright on a variety of saxes, clarinets and flutes, wild card Murray Campbell on oboes and violins, and anchor Lisa Mezzacappa on bass, Bristle funnels its love of multiple musical genres into a collective sensibility that thrives on left turns.
Jazz improv, classical composition, pop hooks, country licks, game strategies, all are tools of the trade for these musical Challengers of the Unknown. Called “charming in a way that is hard to predict” (DMG), Bristle’s last CD Future(s) Now(s) was also named one of the Top 20 California Jazz Releases of 2014 by KQED Arts. It and their previous release, Bulletproof, highlight the influence of mentors like Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill, and Yusef Lateef, and reflects Bristle’s current work with their peers in the Northern California experimental music scene!
Similar Fashion is an avant-rollercoaster-jazz-n-roll band from Los Angeles. Led by saxophonist Logan Hone, Similar Fashion features viola shredder Lauren Baba, magic-emmitting guitarist Gregory Uhlmann, & fire-wielding polyrhythmic groove machine Jesse Quebbeman-Turley. The band combines Logan’s kinetic compositions with intense and joyous singing, interlocking grooves, lush landscapes, and dancing.
Their new album “Portrait of Similar Fashion”, which was mixed by John Dieterich (Deerhoof), is set to release in February 2018. Their debut album Logan Hone’s Similar Fashion was released in 2015 on pfMentum and was described by LA Weekly as “a mostly irreverent romp full of chaotic sounds.” Downtown Music Gallery called it a “breath of fresh air” that “certainly does feel good.”
Similar Fashion toured twice in 2016 and has performed and presented lectures at Angel City Jazz Festival, Bootleg Theater, Cry and Roar, University of Utah, University of Reno, Snow College, College of Southern Idaho, Berkeley Arts Festival, The Blue Whale, Open Gate Concert Series, MorYork, and more.
“The band sounds like they are getting ready to be the soundtrack for an animation film festival, or at least a Warner Brothers Saturday morning matinee.”— Jazz Weekly
