Saul Rayo returns to The Center’s Main Stage Theater with a retrospective covering 15 years of tribute concerts.  Included will be music by The Doors, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Paul Simon, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Crosby Stills & Nash, Creedence, The Beatles, Motown and a song or two by Saul Rayo.

Rayo has been a fan of The Doors since he first heard “Break on Through.” A native of San Francisco, Rayo was influenced by the plethora of bands that debuted in “The City” during the late 1960s. Rayo says, “When The Doors came out of LA, it was something different, yet mystical, bluesy, deep, dark, and soulful. To this day The Doors and the shaman spirit of Jim Morrison carry a deep mystique in their prolific body of work.”

Rayo brings his vocal dexterity and, along with DoorJam, Craig Thomas (keyboards), Perry Mills (electric guitar), Danny Buttacavoli (bass guitar), and Mark Thayer (drums) continue to “break on through to the other side” in their exploration of The Doors when they perform live.

The Center for the Arts executive director, Julie Baker says, “Saul did an acoustic set at our Open House in October 2010, and it was as if he was channeling Morrison. He sounds amazing, prepare to be blown away.”This is substantiated by the 10’s of thousands of hits on the various YouTube live tribute videos.

Last year’s success with the Rayo’s Doors Tribute at the Grass Valley Center for the Arts was due in part to the excitement around the visual projections of Kinetics produced by Dennis Keefe and George Holden. Visual Energy:Kinetics is a major component driving the message behind Saul Rayo’s DoorJam and will create the visual experience, theatre and perfect backdrop to this soulful 15 year tribute retrospective.

Special guests to this unique live performance will be “Ragged But Right”, a foot stompin’ old time string band from Nevada City, opening the show. Ragged’s members first CD, “Porch Pickin’’’ songs were recorded in one take for that “Old-Time” feel. Performing with Rayo’s DoorJam will be Elena Powell, a local recording artist bringing her unique golden tones as a featured backing vocalist and violinist to further heighten the musical experience of the evening; Lea Hume and Janice Polucha, local accomplished vocalists; and Mark McCartney’s drum playing has been described as witnessing “a musical monster that has been unchained”, playing every style from jazz to African to heavy metal to Celtic.

This year’s evolution features the music of The Rolling Stones, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Van Morrison, Joe Cocker, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Paul Simon, Saul Rayo’s original songs, and more.
