“Though those with Alzheimer’s might forget us, we must remember them.”
Scott Kirschenbaum, Filmmaker
Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. This is the only cause of death in the top 10 that cannot be prevented, slowed or cured.
In Western Nevada County, families dealing with Alzheimer’s or other progressive dementia have a place to go for support and assistance–The Alzheimer’s Outreach Program (AOP). Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is one of the most important commitments that someone can make. In most cases, it demands all of your time and all of your energy. Many caregivers experience symptoms of stress such as fatigue, tension, anger, guilt and feeling overwhelmed. Caregivers feel alone and separated from family, friends and community.
The Alzheimer’s Outreach Project provides crisis management, respite and caregiver support, the Yes I Can Caregiver Empowerment Series, and Community Education.
Remember Me! The Face Behind Dementia is a campaign of Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation to raise $200,000 to support the nearly 3,000 people in our community dealing with Alzheimer’s. Donations will support: expanded telephone and in person counseling, respite care to those in need, an additional Yes I Can class series in a year, and community education and outreach.
How Can I Help?
Join the 1,000! We are asking 1,000 people in our community to donate any amount of money, no matter how small, in order to raise half of the funds needed to support our local Alzheimer’s patients and their loved ones. The remaining funds needed will come from grants, corporations and other larger individual donors.
