Featuring a live music collaboration with Jonathan Richman, “The Red Poppy,” created by Associate Choreographer, Marissa Hernandez.
The Movement Alliance Dance Theatre Company (TMA) will celebrate 10 years together in two evenings of dance and local music.
A non-profit organization founded in 2002, TMA is dedicated to artistically enrich our community with fresh and innovative work in Modern and Contemporary Dance, Dance Theater, Multi-Media Work, as well as collaborations with other local artists. The professional company’s six dancers train in modern dance, ballet and jazz 2-3 times per week and rehearse together twice a week as well. Most of the dancers in the company also teach dance for TMA School, SDI, Sierra College and the Nevada City School of the Arts.
TMA’s 10 year anniversary show features a 15 minute premier, “The Red Poppy,” with a live musical collaboration between a stepfather and son duo- Jonathan Richman (guitar) and Jason Wilkinson, (percussion) and TMA’s Associate Choreographer, Marissa Hernandez. Jonathan Richman, (guitarist/singer born in Boston in 1951), has been making albums for the past 36 years; first with his band, “The Modern Lovers,” who’s raw minimalistic sound laid much of the groundwork for punk rock music. Richman has composed soundtracks to numerous films including “There’s Something about Mary,” in which he made a cameo appearance as a troubadour. He has also been seen on late night television and “Sesame Street” every so often, singing his songs. He is a Vapor records recording artist winning fans and making friends around the world with his guileless honesty and playful, catchy compositions. He is revered by countless fellow artists and has built a remarkably loyal international audience. The Movement Alliance is ecstatic to be working with Richman for their 10 year anniversary.
Twenty-three of Nevada County’s local musical artists are celebrated in a one act tribute, “Local Legends,” choreographed by TMA Director, Lovie Bucknell. Included in this collage of 1-2 minute musical excerpts are: Golden Shoulders, The Moore Brothers, Mariee Sioux, Gary Snyder (poet) with Ludi Hindrichs, Daniel Flanigan and Shawn Carrigan, Jeff Thorsby, Them Hills, Lee Bob Watson, Paul Kamm and Eleanor MacDonald with Mikail Graham, Alela Diane, Andrew Hodgson, The Soft Bombs, Joanna Newsom, Brett Shady, Sista Kat, Blake Severn, Dakota Sid with Travers Clifford, and Utah Phillips. The beginning of this premiere contains a multi-media short film in the background of the piece by Adam Kline, to his song, “The Honey, The Power, The Light.” CDs of this unique and diverse music will be available.
TMA’s Junior Company will also perform another premier, “In Keeping Secrets,” choreographed by it’s Director, Marissa Hernandez and performed by three exceptional teens from NUHS, Sierra College and the Ghiddotti High School program.
Joining TMA for this celebration will be local dance educators and choreographers, Azriel LaMarca and Shari Brookler in a duet premier. LaMarca earned her Bachelors Degree in dance from UC Santa Cruz and has taught and performed in the community for over ten years, while Brooker holds a Masters in Choreography from UC Santa Barbara. The two have been exploring what it means to create a friendship and collaboratively translating their experience into a new dance work.
Friday night will also feature a post show gala reception and celebration with the cast and Saturday night’s show will have a Q and A discussion with the audience after the concert. For more information please call 530-277-2046 or go to www.themovementalliance.org
