The Nevada County Performing Arts Guild is proud to announce it’s Spring Musical featuring, Adventure on the High Seas – Gilbert & Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore.   H.M.S. Pinafore is one of 14 famous Operettas written by the team of Gilbert & Sullivan and shares it’s popularity with The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado.

Mila Johansen has adapted this version for family audiences and includes a very talented cast of 38 young  thespians.  The original version was written with 2/3 music and 1/3 dialogue.  This innovative version is 1/3 music and 2/3 dialogue and promises to entertain audiences of all ages by continuing to expose the public to these famous musical plays which have been performed by casts of all ages for over a century in many creative styles and variations.

The Gilbert & Sullivan Operettas are like extravagant cartoons that this creative team wrote to poke fun at the pompous English Aristocracy, especially criticizing and exposing the imperious British political system.  In fact, when the Queen of England Knighted Sullivan, she refused to Knight Gilbert for some time until, due to popular demand, she finally gave in.

The story takes place on board Her Majesty’s Ship, the H.M.S. Pinafore.  Captain Corcoran is the commander and lives on board with his very energetic and rambunctious daughters who keep rejecting the strict Governesses that their father keeps choosing for them.  They go so far as to tying one of the strict Governesses to the ship’s mast, much to the dismay of the Captain who is at his wits end.  The girls go on to choose a Mary Poppins type Governess who quickly gains their affections.  Many other colorful characters are introduced such as, Mad Madeline, the ships cook; Deadeye Dan, a mean and cantankerous character; other seamen like Jud Dundee, Dodge Rodger, Mickey, Billy, Bobby and Birdy; Georgette, the tomboy of the sisters; Josephine and Ralph, the young lovers that are worlds apart; Sir Joseph Porter, first lord of the Admiralty and the ever famous Buttercup.  The plot thickens with the discovery of mixed up births and changing titles but culminates in the typical Gilbert & Sullivan fashion of surprising happy endings.

The beautifully artistic and period costumes really set the scene and promise to be a special delight to the eye.  The set is made to depict a wooden ship with two deck levels and should engage all audiences with it’s unique characteristics as the H.M.S. Pinafore sails with it’s “Adventures on the High Seas!”
