Dear Peter Wilson,

Since I last wrote, I’ve been to New York for APAP the largest Arts Presenting Conference in the United States. In addition to booking shows and meeting with agents, I attended some great workshops on capitalization strategies for non profit performing arts centers and listened to many inspiring speakers including Ben Cameron from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation who encouraged us to stop thinking of ourselves as providing entertainment but as social activists. He went on to say that he could not imagine a more important time in history where diverse populations need to come together for shared, enlightening, educational and inspiring artistic experiences that make you laugh, cry, question, and create new memories. I loved this message and hope you feel we are playing our part in providing this platform for Nevada County. Our vision to build community through the arts is part of this approach as well. In February, we are pleased to continue our non profit community partnership program with Hospitality House.

February has started off strong! We just completed our first week of After School Art Classes with Vicki Parker, offerings scholarships to under-served youths funded by AJA Video, Bill Graham Supporting Foundation, Walton’s Grizzly Lodge of the Stein Family Foundation and Rincon del Rio. Tonight we present our 5th show this week with founding member of X and The Knitters John Doe. February showcases some great talent including Canadian singer/songwriters Dala, New York’s Blues and Soul musician, Eric Bibb, Fred Eaglesmith and his Traveling Band and rounding out the month with LadySmith Black Mambazo!

And finally, as many of you have already heard one of our Center family members, AirAligned Director Tresa Honaker was injured last month while in a rehearsal. Tresa’s back and several ribs were broken. Many different fundraisers are in the planning stages and funds have been set up to help Tresa in her recovery. If you are interested in donating or following Tresa’s treatment please visit Tresa’s Facebook page. I know you all join me in sending Tresa support and love.

Introducing our February Non-Profit Partner
Hospitality House

Hospitality House is a year-round shelter serving homeless people in Nevada County. Currently their program follows a nomadic model. Every night, guests are hosted by one of many local faith communities that provide a hot dinner and a safe place to sleep. At the afternoon Welcome Center, guests receive a nourishing lunch, personalized case management, onsite medical/dental care/referrals, and many other services.

Hospitality House recently acquired a building that will be renovated to become their permanent home. This is the largest step that they have ever taken, bar none. Its completion will require a huge effort on the part of the entire loving, caring community.

As you celebrate Valentine’s Day and the spirit of loving care, remember those at Hospitality House. Open your heart with a donation or support them by attending the Lady Smith Black Mambazo show on February 27 or the Empty Bowl Soup Supper benefit on February 25. You can also support Hospitality House through participation in their Adopt-A-Night program.

Who are the homeless? They are people challenged by illness or injury, or both; by traumas of childhood or war, or both; by their own imperfect choices or those of others, or both; or by all of these troubles. Too often they are children. Whatever challenges our guests face, Hospitality House offers them a warm welcome and a powerful helping hand.

Membership at The Center Pays!

Your membership at The Center for the Arts is an important part of our success and we are always monitoring how we can best serve you – our members. With that in mind, we’ve implemented some changes to our Member Benefit Program that we want to acquaint you with.

Historically, we have offered a guest pass as a benefit of membership. The guest passes had some restrictions though that members sometimes found frustrating. So, we’ve replaced the guest pass with a $10 ticket voucher that can be used like cash at ANY Center production including the Main Stage or Vet’s Hall productions.

We’ve also added some great opportunities for reserved parking and customized, concierge service to make your experience at The Center complete. Of course, when you become a member of The Center, your dollars go towards all of the programs that we offer including Youth Arts Education, our Non-Profit Community Partner program, and much more. Thank you for joining us as a member and doing your part to make The Center for the Arts the vibrant community resource it is.

Heart Strings and Kenny White

The Center for the Arts has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Over the past few years, we’ve presented world-class entertainers such as Rickie Lee Jones, Judy Collins performing with Kenny White, and blues great Mose Allison. One of the reasons that we are able to bring such great artists to our relatively small town is our ability to provide production services and equipment, including the addition of our Steinway Grand Piano in 2009, that rivals any big city venue.

Join us for a special Valentine’s Day event when we present an encore performance by Kenny White on February 12 as part of our Heart Strings campaign. Kenny received a standing ovation when he opened for Judy Collins in September of 2011. You can enjoy his music and Valentine’s Day romance while you support The Center’s efforts to pay off the Steinway through this fundraising concert.

You can also support the cause by purchasing a piano string on the Steinway Grand for $50. It’s our goal to sell all 230 strings, so buy one for yourself and buy one for a friend. You’ll receive a commemorative token of your purchase and our heartfelt thanks for your support. Piano strings will be available starting February 1 either online or at The Center.

Hospitality House is a non-profit program in Nevada County servicing the homeless, working in collaboration with our local churches and other service organizations. Based on a model that has worked very well in places like Placer and Butte counties, Hospitality House is a winter-only “nomadic homeless shelter”, in other words, instead of a permanent location, it rotates among participating churches.

Mission Statement

The Hospitality House is a non-profit program that provides the homeless with a compassionate place of rest, sustenance, dignity and hope.

As another year comes to a close we reflect upon our ACCOMPLISHMENTS, our challenges and the VALUE we provide to NevadaCounty. In 2011 we implemented the vision of BUILDING COMMUNITY through the emotional power and economic vitality of the performing arts and the wide array of events we present. We’ve worked hard to become a leader in providing you with high quality, artistic and diverse ENTERTAINMENT offerings, education programs for our YOUTH and a collaborative approach to fundraising. I hope you’ve had an opportunity to experience all The Center has to offer.

It’s through your ongoing investment in THE CENTER that we’ve been able to continue to grow throughout 2011.Your investment in The Center has made it what it is today. In 2011 we helped raise over $25,000 for area non profits and grew programming to include eight offsite HEADLINING shows which contribute to the ECONOMIC GROWTH and awareness of our region as a destination for cultural tourism.

In 2012 we will continue the same level and diversity of programming with a further emphasis on our youth art education services. We are continually looking for ways to benefit the whole community and areas in which we can provide value. Our collaboration with area non profits to benefit from our headlining concerts will also continue and grow. We know the arts can make a difference not only for the audience member but the whole community as well.

Thank you for making that investment in the arts and in the livability of our community. As we wrap up 2011 and prepare for an even bigger 2012, you’re continued support is more important than ever. Please consider making an end-of-year investment in building our community through a tax-deductible contribution to The Center for the Arts.

Community Non-Profit Partner Program

The Center for the Arts is committed to supporting our community through collaboration with other area not-for-profit organizations. We believe that collaboration is the key to greater strength and economic stability for all who serve our region through non-profit service.

One of the ways we are doing this in 2012 is through our new Community Non-Profit Partner Program. For the last two years, The Center for the Arts has partnered with various non-profit organizations to assist in fund-raising and outreach. Now, we are making that effort even richer by expanding our non-profit collaborations with a focus on one non-profit each month with specific outreach and promotion for the organization during that month. Each month, the Community Non-Profit Partner receive:

Banner and info on our website
Presence in our lobby (brochures, wish list, small display, ways to give info and logo
on the Community Non Profit Partner of the Month board)
Presence on our pre show screening
Spotlight in our email newsletter at beginning of the month

In early December, we asked members of community, The Center for the Arts Facebook fans & friends, and email subscribers to pick their favorite non-profit in Nevada County for The Center to partner with in 2012. We are proud to announce that PAG (The Nevada County Performing Arts Guild) has received 5 Elly Nominations from SARTA (The Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance). Their productions were judged from at least 20 other Theatre Companies within the greater Sacramento and outlying areas. PAG has received over 60 Elly nominations and more than 25 Elly Awards over the past 27 years. PAG is the longest consecutive running Theatre Company in Nevada County producing three major productions a year.
