“Antsy McClain is a troubadour with some connections. Tommy Emmanuel plays on several tracks and Lindsey Buckingham sings harmony on Time-Sweetened Lies. Creative, rootsy, and wonderful. If you like it served 100 proof, step right up.”
– Robert K. Oermann, Music Row News, Nashville

“When I first looked into the Trailer Park Troubadours, I was prepared for them to be funny. What I wasn’t prepared for was these guys are flat-out GREAT. Their humor is obvious. When they sing songs like “My Baby Whistles When She Walks” (it’s not what you think), it’s a scream. But then, a few songs in, you hear something as poignant and rich as “Primer Grey Impala,” you kinda sit up and take notice. These guys can really, REALLY, play and sing.”
– Take Country Back, www.takecountryback.com

Singer, songwriter, humorist and small town philosopher Antsy McClain writes what he knows: The good life.

Staging his live shows from a small, fictitious trailer park called Pine View Heights (patterned after his own childhood surroundings and experiences), McClain is free from an over-abundance of material things and appreciates time with family and friends.

Sharing his mantra of “Enjoy The Ride,” McClain has won friendship and collaboration with some of the most talented musicians in the world. With such a wide circle of mentors like Waylon Jennings, Tommy Smothers, guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel and cowboy poet Baxter Black, it’s no wonder McClain marches to the beat of a different drum. And his influences don’t stop there. His live shows touch upon Country, Rockabilly, Jazz, Swing, and a number of Pop culture references.

McClain’s poetry, heart-felt ballads and humorous tales have garnered praise from such artists as Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Lindsay Buckingham, and David Wilcox, to name a few.

After a Nashville record deal proved unfruitful in 1999, McClain took the reins himself and blazed one of the industries first fiercely independent campaigns, producing some of Americana’s most innovative projects, and cleverly relying on fan involvement (They call themselves Flamingoheads) to finance each album, and help promote live shows and events.

Before music found him, Antsy was an award-winning illustrator and designer for book and magazine publishers. As the DIY movement took hold, McClain was one of the first artists of note to not only record, mix and produce his own albums, but to serve as art director and designer for everything involving his music career; from CD package design to website design to merchandise. The band’s t-shirts are looked at as one-of-a-kind boutique item originals, often signed and numbered when sold.

When accused of being a control freak, McClain flashes a guilty look, but dissuades the dig by saying, “I’ve always just tried to save myself money. I was a self employed guy with five kids. We had an agreement that my wife was to be home while they were young, and it worked out great. But I didn’t have a thousand dollars to pay somebody for a logo. If I was going to have one, I’d have to do it.”

Calling himself “a life enthusiast,” Antsy McClain is eager to see what’s around every corner, and watches the horizon intently for each new change that takes place.

“My life is my art,” explains Antsy, “I am painting my life one day at a time, one brush stroke at a time. As I spend time with my wife and children, or as I go on the road toward new places to make new friends, as I write a new song, as I draw or paint something for people to look at and enjoy… This is my life, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to share it with music, with words and with pictures.”

McClain looks out the window as a car whirs past, “I am enjoying the ride.”

WRITING & PERFORMING WORKSHOP
Saturday at 10:00-11:30AM
Writing and Performing Adapted Work, a workshop by Director Cliff Mayotte and MYT Teen Troupe. For middle and high school students. 90 minutes.
$15/12 for Center Members

In this workshop we’ll explore the themes that MYT extracted from Mark Twain’s story to create Truthtopia: greed, hypocrisy, false personas and moral responsibility. Director Cliff Mayotte will begin the workshop with improvisation and drama exercises, followed by a short writing session. Participants will work alongside MYT actors to create and perform our new scene sketches. Enjoy working with creative teens from San Francisco!

The Marsh, a breeding ground for new performance, is pleased to announce Marsh Youth Theater’s Teen Touring Troupe production of Truthtopia. MYT Director Emily Klion created MYT Teen Troupe in 2008, to serve the artistic needs of MYT’s high school students, creating and producing original musical theater that speaks to the sensibilities of teens. Since its inception, The Troupe has performed critically acclaimed productions of Kim Epifano’s Fears of Your Life, Ron Jones’ The Wave, and Emily Klion, Lisa Quoresimo and Danny Duncan’s Siddhartha, The Bright Path, all of which were created or reworked specifically for the Teen Troupe. After a sold-out run of The Wave, Director Cliff Mayotte came up with the idea of a touring troupe to give both these talented students and their original work a wider reach and bring MYT’s unique style of theater to venues beyond The Marsh.

MYT Teen Touring Troupe, composed of 22 teens from all over San Francisco and 14 different schools including homeschools, launched its inaugural season in December at SOMARTS Youth Arts Festival and The Marsh Berkeley with TRUTHTOPIA, a musical based on Mark Twain’s 1899 satirical story, The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg. What happens when a mysterious stranger abandons a suitcase full of money in the midst of a respectable town of honest model citizens? Chaos, of course! MYT students portray Twain’s hilarious story of temptation, greed and treachery by creating an up-to-date version set to exuberant music and dance. Timely? Greed never goes out of style! Twain’s wit, wisdom and message still have much to say to us. Under the direction of Cliff Mayotte, the Troupe’s Creative Corps, a subset of dedicated teen writers, adapted the script from Twain’s writing. It is a brilliant reminder that an honest reputation means nothing until it’s put to the test.

Over the past months, the production has travelled to schools, libraries, parks and festivals, as well as theater venues throughout the Bay Area and now, Grass Valley. Based on the model of San Francisco’s famed Mime Troupe, the production and technical requirements have been kept to a minimum, with a portable set and flexible staging that can adapt to any venue (the Troupe designed the sets and costumes themselves). In preparation for each show, the teens learn about booking, theater tech, publicity, flexibility and even concessions—all the business of theater that goes on behind the scenes.

MYT Teen Troupe actors are diverse in a multitude of ways: cultural background, family income, physical ability and educational experience. Each actor brings a unique perspective and depth to the ensemble. Many MYT Teens come from low income and immigrant families and have had little opportunity to travel beyond their own San Francisco neighborhood. Some have never had the opportunity to see sights that are common to a Grass Valley teen: rivers, mountains and open space. In Grass Valley, troupe members will stay at the homes of Grass Valley high school students, allowing a unique interaction between urban and rural teenagers. This event will be a wonderful exchange of culture and creativity. MYT Teen Troupe will lead a workshop on Saturday morning: Writing and Performing Adapted Work, in which Grass Valley teens will have taste of the adaptation process MYT’s Creative Corps used to create Truthtopia.

Truthtopia Director Cliff Mayotte is an award-winning educator and director. He is currently serving as the Education Program Director for Voice of Witness, where he is co-creating a national oral history curriculum with Facing History and Ourselves. In 2008, Mayotte received the Beverly Kees Educator Award from the Northern California Chapter of The Society of Professional Journalists for his work in integrating oral history, civic engagement and performance. From 1997-2000, he served as the Education Director for the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. As a director, he has staged plays for such notable local theatres as Aurora Theatre Company, Shotgun Players, Marin Shakespeare Company, Rough and Tumble and The Marsh. His work has garnered awards from the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle, Drama-Logue and SF Weekly. Cliff is the Education Director for McSweeny’s Voice of Witness and the author of A Community Talks to Itself, an oral history theater guide for educators.

MYT Director Emily Klion has had an illustrious career as a musical theater producer, composer and musical director. She received her BA and MA degrees from Mills College in music composition, studying with such luminaries as Terry Riley, Lou Harrison and Indian singer Pandit Pran Nath. Klion received a Thomas Watson Fellowship for a study in India or raga and vocal music. In 2001, Emily founded the Marsh Youth Theater (MYT) with The Marsh’s Executive Director, Stephanie Weisman. Emily has adapted and created many full-length youth theater productions for which she composes the musical scores and songs, including Jip, His Story; Siddhartha, The Bright Path; The Last Wild Witch; The Wave; Persephone Cubana and others. In 2008, refugee students from the Tibetan Children’s Center in Dharamsala, India performed Siddhartha. Klion received the Bay Area Critic’s Circle Award and the Hollywood Dramalogue Award for her musical score and direction of Tony Pellegrino’s critically acclaimed show, Deer Rose, a recipient of the Will Glickman Playwright Award, and in 2006 received the Rex Foundation’s Jerry Garcia Award for Promoting Creativity in Youth. In 2008, Klion received Curtain Call’s American Harmony Award for her musical theater adaptation of Katherine Paterson’s Jip, His Story. Emily collaborated with Nevada City songwriter, musician and theater artist Maggie McKaig for ten years as co-creators and composers of many youth theater projects at San Francisco’s Center Stage. Maggie is the student coordinator for MYT students in Grass Valley.

Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, MYT provides high-quality theater-arts education and performance opportunities to over 650 talented youth, regardless of financial circumstances, both at The Marsh and in partnerships with local public schools and other community arts organization. Starting with aerial flying classes for toddlers to courses in dance, drama, singing and stagecraft to performance ensembles for elementary, middle and high school students, MYT is designed to build children’s theatrical skills from the ground up, regardless of past arts experience or financial differences.

This is an Urban youth theater company – for some kids this is the first time they will leave the City and come to a rural community!

In the past years, NCHCH has grown from a handful of concerned citizens to a grass roots organization with a 12 member governing Board of Directors, a roster of 25 Standing Committee Members, over 60 committed volunteers and 500 loyal financial donors, all committed to achieving our mission of providing simple and decent affordable homes for hard-working local families. To date NCHFH has completed 22 homes across Nevada County providing affordable homeownership for 31 adults and 66 children of qualified families.

Having safe, permanent, affordable housing benefits the entire community. The project supports local suppliers through the purchase of building materials, and funds city services through local government fees. Habitat homeowners become property owners, pay local property taxes to fund schools, and contribute to the local economy. The lack of adequate and stable housing affects the children in the family in multiple ways from low academic performance all the way to potentially becoming involved in crime. Outcomes for children are better across the board when they have a place to come home to every day, the space to grow and learn, and a life free from the worry of having to change schools as rents increase and families move. NCHFH creates a long-term permanent solution to an immediate need for stability in a child’s life. A current high-profile study by Harkness and Newman found that home ownership has a significant positive impact on the children in the following ways:

Significantly improves cognitive behavior and reduces behavior problems

Reduces poor educational outcomes due to residential stability leading to a 20% higher high school graduation rate than families of renters.

Increases community involvement of family

60% less likely to give birth as an unwed teenager and twice as likely NOT to be idle at age 20 and to rely on welfare as an adult.

Children of homeowners are 30% more likely to acquire post-secondary education and their average hourly wage is a little over a dollar more.

Since I last wrote, I’ve been to New York for APAP the largest Arts Presenting Conference in the United States. In addition to booking shows and meeting with agents, I attended some great workshops on capitalization strategies for non profit performing arts centers and listened to many inspiring speakers including Ben Cameron from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation who encouraged us to stop thinking of ourselves as providing entertainment but as social activists. He went on to say that he could not imagine a more important time in history where diverse populations need to come together for shared, enlightening, educational and inspiring artistic experiences that make you laugh, cry, question, and create new memories. I loved this message and hope you feel we are playing our part in providing this platform for Nevada County. Our vision to build community through the arts is part of this approach as well. In February, we are pleased to continue our non profit community partnership program with Hospitality House.

Currently their program follows a nomadic model. Every night, guests are hosted by one of many local faith communities that provide a hot dinner and a safe place to sleep. At the afternoon Welcome Center, guests receive a nourishing lunch, personalized case management, onsite medical/dental care/referrals, and many other services.

Historically, we have offered a guest pass as a benefit of membership. The guest passes had some restrictions though that members sometimes found frustrating. So, we’ve replaced the guest pass with a $10 ticket voucher that can be used like cash at ANY Center production including the Main Stage or Vet’s Hall productions.

We’ve also added some great opportunities for reserved parking and customized, concierge service to make your experience at The Center complete. Of course, when you become a member of The Center, your dollars go towards all of the programs that we offer including Youth Arts Education, our Non-Profit Community Partner program, and much more. Thank you for joining us as a member and doing your part to make The Center for the Arts the vibrant community resource it is.

Based on a model that has worked very well in places like Placer and Butte counties, Hospitality House is a winter-only “nomadic homeless shelter”, in other words, instead of a permanent location, it rotates among participating churches.

Mission Statement

The Hospitality House is a non-profit program that provides the homeless with a compassionate place of rest, sustenance, dignity and hope.

Fine musical instruments like a Steinway come with a price tag in the neighborhood of $50,000 to $100,000. We were fortunate to have the ability to purchase a used Steinway at the lower end of the pricing scale and, while we’ve come a long way in the past two years in raising the funds to pay for this beautiful instrument with our Piano Key Program and other fundraising efforts, we are not there yet.

You’re invited to be a part of the “heartbeat” of The Center for the Arts by participating in our Heart Strings campaign. Show your support of the fine talent being brought to Nevada County by purchasing a piano string on the Steinway Grand for $50. It’s our goal to sell all 230 strings, so buy one for yourself and buy one for a friend. You’ll receive a commemorative token of your purchase and our heartfelt thanks for your support. Piano strings will be available starting February 1 either online or at The Center.
