February 2017 Non-profit: Cinderella Project

What is the Cinderella Project?
The Cinderella Project provides special occasion dresses and accessories free of charge to High School juniors and seniors so they may attend their Senior Ball in style. Our mission is to ensure that any young woman in our community who can not attend the prom due to financial constraints will be able to realize the positive life experience of attending their high school prom.

The Cinderella Project started in 2011 because of an idea Terri Nelson had: make sure every girl in Nevada County gets to go to her Prom in a beautiful dress. That first year Terri and Judy Ballentine single handedly outfitted 25 girls from NU and Bear River.

In 2012 with a few more fairy godmothers enlisted, and the fiscal sponsorship of the Friendship Club, the Cinderella Project provided dresses, shoes, jewelry and hairstyles to 50 girls from every high school in Nevada County. The Friendship Club connection meant that we could enjoy 501 c3 status and donations were tax deductible. We received over $3000 in cash donations and generous donations from hairstylists, tuxedo rentals, and the retail space for the boutique.

In 2013 with the infusion of about 15 fairy godmothers, the Cinderella Project expanded again and over 100 students, boys and girls, went to their Prom or Ball in tuxedos and dresses provided by the generosity of the Cinderella Project.
